     “The Black Culture Foundation is accepting applications for its 2025 Student College Scholarship Awards,” said President Carl M. Dameron.

    SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. –The Black Culture Foundation is accepting applications for its 2025 Black Rose Festival student scholarships. The Black Culture Foundation Scholarship Program provides scholarships for financial assistance to graduating high school and current college students.

    “This scholarship seeks to support civic-minded students who want to give back to the region and demonstrate motivation, perseverance, and a sincere desire to use their education to benefit the Inland Empire and underserved communities,” said Scholarship Chair Rev. Bronica Martindale.

    “Winners will receive a one-time scholarship of $1,000 to $3,000 to an accredited public or private four-year, bachelor’s degree-granting institution or two-year community college associate degree-granting institution of higher learning,” said Black Culture Foundation President Carl M. Dameron.

    Students who intend to work in the region will be given priority upon graduation. The scholarships are funded when students officially enroll. Awards may be used for tuition, books, fees, and living expenses. High school seniors and current undergraduate college students are encouraged to apply.

    Applicants will be selected based on the following criteria:

    • Financial need
    • Letter of recommendation
    • GPA of 3.5 or above
    • Community service
    • High school senior or current bachelor’s degree holder
    • Attend a college within the Inland Empire
    • Full-time undergraduate or graduate student enrolling in the fall of 2025
    • Intent to work in the Inland Empire upon graduation from college/university

    Eligible students must submit 1) the application form; 2) a letter of recommendation from a counselor and another person not related to the applicant who is familiar with the applicant’s academic capabilities, skills, community service, and volunteer activities; 3) a current report card/transcript (unofficial is acceptable).

    Final award recipients must provide evidence of enrollment in the academic institution to which funds will be provided on behalf of the recipient.

    Interested students can obtain an application online from the Black Culture Foundation.

    On Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 5:30 p.m., the Black Culture Foundation will honor and celebrate the remarkable work of these individuals at the 33rd Annual Black Rose Awards in the Santos Manuel Student Union at Cal State San Bernardino.  Tickets, sponsorship opportunities, and program advertising are available online at the foundation’s website.

    About the Black Rose Awards

    The Black Rose Awards serve as a tribute to Black History Month. The awards are sponsored by the Black Culture Foundation, a non-profit established in 1968 by a small group of individuals who felt that our school systems have failed to include Black history studies in regular curriculums nationwide. As a result, all students miss the chance to learn more about this crucial part of our country’s history.

    The Black Culture Foundation’s noble purpose is to kindle an interest in and deeper appreciation of Black culture, raise community awareness about the achievements of Black individuals, past and present, and organize an annual Black History Month parade and associated cultural events. Furthermore, the foundation seeks to transcend cultural barriers by uniting the local community and celebrating this event with unity and brotherhood.

    The Black Rose Awards are the Foundation’s showcase cultural event.

    The “Toward a Shared Vision Awards” ceremony will occur on Thursday, October 26th, at the Riverside Convention Center. Hosted by Growing Inland Achievement (GIA), a local nonprofit, the awards recognize contributions to educational attainment and economic success in the Inland Empire.

    RIVERSIDE, CA — Seven individuals and five groups will be recognized for their work in driving Inland Empire’sducational and economic success.

    The Toward a Shared Vision Awards ceremony is set for Thursday, Oct. 26, at the Riverside Convention Center.

    “The Toward a Shared Vision Awards recognizes individuals and groups making significant contributions to educational attainment and economic success in the Inland Empire region while embodying core values of equity, transformation, collaboration, innovation, and centering students,” said Ann Marie Sakrekoff, Interim CEO of Growing Inland Achievement (GIA), the local nonprofit hosting the awards celebration.

    “We received twenty-five nominations for individuals and groups throughout the region, all of which are well-deserving candidates,” said Sakrekoff. “GIA brought together a diverse panel of representatives from local education and community-based organizations who deliberated and selected 12 individuals and groups to be recognized across six categories.”

    Friendship Is Good for Our Mental Health

    The new Bus Shelter Ad for Making Hope Happen’s Inland Empire Men’s Mental Health Program’s campaign: Friendship is good for our mental health.

    “One of the things we learn in Adult Mental Health First Aid, is that spending time with your friends is good for your mental health,” said Ceseña.

    (San Bernardino, Calif.)  “It’s one of those ‘everybody knows’ things, that men tend to be reluctant to ask for help when they need it. To counter the negative stigma that’s attached to the whole mental health industry, we now offer classes for people who have friends or family that may be going through some tough times,” said Inland Empire Men’s Mental Health Program Manager Gerzon Ceseña.

    The Making Hope Happen Foundation offers free classes through its Inland Empire Men’s Mental Health program for people who would like to help adults and youngsters who may be having a tough time.

    Ceseña says, “We have three classes that teach about the warning signs for things ranging from aggressive acting-out to panic attacks, from depression to suicidal thoughts, and the right and wrong ways to approach those who are going through a rough patch and help them.”

    “One of the things we learn in Adult Mental Health First Aid, is that spending time with your friends is good for your mental health,” said Ceseña.

    The three classes are: QPR (Question / Persuade / Refer) Gatekeeper, Adult Mental Health First Aid and Youth Mental Health First Aid.

    The QPR Gatekeeper course is the shortest of the three, taking only about an hour to 90 minutes, depending on how many people are enrolled and the number of questions that are raised during the training. It covers the essentials of recognizing problem symptoms and how to help.

    The Adult Mental Health First Aid class has seven sections and includes videos, role-playing and descriptive scenarios so participants can rehearse realistic situations with a knowledgeable instructor and be prepared to help someone who might be reluctant to open up to mental health professional but will talk with a friend.

    Youth Mental Health First Aid has a self-paced opening section, followed by four more sections that cover various aspects of how to be an effective friend to a youth having problems.

    Ceseña recommends the QPR Gatekeeper course as a first step for people who are interested in the training. “From there, QPR grads can go on to either the Adult or Youth First Aid class, depending on their individual focus,” he notes. Classes are delivered online via the Zoom Video Conference tool.

    Lifehouse Theater Presents World Premiere Musical  “Phantom Of The Opera”

    Haven Fair plays the mysterious Erik, the Phantom of Opera. in LifeHouse Theater’s original musical “Phantom of the Opera” running August 26 – September 24, 2017 in Redlands.

    (Redlands. Calif.) The popular and suspenseful tale of the mysterious Phantom comes to LifeHouse Theater in a new original musical.  “Guests will witness young Christine’s rise to fame in the opera world, thanks to the schemes of the ominous Phantom, who seeks to win her heart.  Sinister plots abound amidst comedic moments and tragic situations based on the original classic novel, “said Jeff DeWitt, General Manager of LifeHouse Productions, Inc.

    Performances begin Saturday, August 26, at 7:30 PM and will continue on weekends through September 24.  Performances are Fridays at 7:30 PM, Saturdays at 2:15 PM (except Opening Night) and 7:30 PM, and Sundays at 2:15 PM.  A special Throwback Thursday evening performance, with special pricing, is September 21 at 7:30 PM. The performance on Friday, September 8, at 7:30 PM also feature an interpreted presentation for the deaf.

    “It was a daunting challenge to adapt this epic story for the stage, especially since many versions have been produced,” said LifeHouse President Wayne R. Scott, who wrote and directed this new musical.  “I found that by staying true to the novel written by Gaston Leroux, there is an amazing tale to be told with fresh and redemptive angles audiences have come to appreciate in our productions.”

    “All the experience and expertise Wayne has had as a storyteller are put on display in this musical,” said DeWitt.  “There is so much more to the story that is brought out in our production.  Guests are in for a real treat.”

    Scott has teamed with professional television music composer Zach Marsh, who has worked with him in creating the contemporary score, lyrics and orchestration. Scott’s production staff includes assistant director Chris Hallenbeck, choreographers Jennifer M. DeWitt and Tai Dooley, music directors Sarah Pearce and Jeremy Yeo and costume designer Machir Lakofka.  Scenic design is by Vincent Martinucci.

    This new musical adaptation features a cast of more than thirty performers from all over the Inland Empire.

    The Players includes Haven Fair plays Erik, the Phantom of the tale.  Autumn Manson plays Christine Daae and Jordan Crother plays Raoul.  The production also features Diana Handy as Carlotta Guidicelli, John Griffith as Pierre Dubois, Lilly Spencer as Meg Giry, Dave Hurley as Armand Moncharmin, Rich Lampe as Firmin Richard, Duane Crother as Gerrard Sorelli, Nick Diliberto as Commissioner Mifroid and Priscilla George as Madame Giry.

    Phantom of the Opera” concludes LifeHouse Theater‘s 23rd season.  The new 24th season has been announced with money-saving season passes now on sale at the LifeHouse Box Office.
