    Is LaSalle Medical Associates for Sale?

    “I get asked two questions all the time by all kinds of people: Am I going to retire and is LaSalle Medical for sale?” — Albert Arteaga, M.D.

    REDLANDS, CALIF. —  As the company looks forward to celebrating its 40th anniversary in June, the answer is “No,” says Albert Arteaga, M.D., founder and president of LaSalle Medical Associates, Inc. “We are the largest private, Hispanic-owned healthcare organization in the Inland Empire, and we are growing. Why would I want to stop?”

    Dr. Arteaga opened his first solo practice with his wife Maria in Fontana in May 1984, after completing his pediatric residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Funding for LaSalle came from Operation Second Chance, a Small Business Administration program created to train people of color and fund business start-ups, led by civil rights pioneer Francis Grice.

    From that humble beginning, LaSalle has grown, adding facilities and a network of specialists, to the point where today there are five open clinics, two in San Bernardino and one each in Fontana, Hesperia, and Rialto, with plans to reopen the Victorville location that had to close during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The practice employs more than 110 healthcare professionals.

    “I would say that our crowning achievement is our emphasis on outreach, getting people to come in for regular checkups that focus on prevention,” says Dr. Arteaga. “Treating people who suffer from illness is fine, but being able to spot warning signs in advance and ensuring that patients don’t need to undergo more intensive and lengthy treatment is LaSalle’s priority.”

    In 1995 Dr. Arteaga established the LaSalle Independent Practice Association (IPA), “…a business entity organized and owned by a network of independent physician practices.”

    Today, the LaSalle IPA includes members in Southern California’s San Bernardino, Riverside, and Los Angeles counties, as well as Fresno, Kings, Madera, and Tulare counties in Central California. The LaSalle IPA serves more than 360,000 patients statewide.

    Dr. Arteaga goes on to say, “We recently changed our healthcare management services provider, hired a new CEO, Duane Whittington, eight months ago, and just added a brand new Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Bryan Foster. They both left one of the Inland Empire’s biggest healthcare organizations to come to work for us at LaSalle.

    “Duane and Bryan have relieved me of a lot of administrative responsibilities and freed me up to focus on future growth prospects.”

    LaSalle’s expansion plans include growing the IPA. “Our Independent Practice Association helps doctors focus on treating their patients while we do the paperwork and negotiate contracts with insurance companies, and companies that provide medical services including imaging, blood testing, and other services. We make it easier for doctors to be doctors,” said Dr. Arteaga.

    The IPA is expanding the number of doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants for current and future locations. “If you are looking for a career serving patients with The Gold Standard of Care, LaSalle is looking for you,” said Dr. Arteaga, who is also looking to grow the number of clinics through mergers and acquisitions.

    Selling or retiring is not an option for Arteaga. “Most retirees go ahead and retire for one of two reasons—they’re either tired or there’s something else they want to do. In my case, neither of those apply. So, is LaSalle for sale? My answer is no!”

    Renowned Psychologist to Speak on The Evolution of The Spiritual Impulse

    Redlands, Calif.  Dr. Daniel Benveniste is a renowned psychologist and author of major books on the classic works of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, will deliver the 36th Annual Rabbi Norman F. Feldheym Memorial Lecture on Thursday, February 9th at 7:30 pm at Congregation Emanu El in Redlands.

    The topic of the illustrated lecture is The Evolution of the Spiritual Impulse.” It will certainly be of interest to people of all faiths as well as students of psychology,” said Rabbi Hillel Cohen.

    Dr. Benveniste grew up in San Bernardino and currently lives in the Pacific Northwest where he teaches and is a clinical psychologist. He is the author of two major works in the field of psychology – The Interwoven Lives of Sigmund, Anna, and W. Ernest Freud: Three Generations of Psychoanalysis and the most recently published –Libido, Culture, and Consciousness – Revisiting Freud’s Totem and Taboo.

    “In the lecture, he will share some of the most significant insights of Freud and Jung. Benveniste has been acclaimed for weaving together the fields of archeology, anthropology, philosophy, psychology, psychoanalytic theory, sociology, and religion to get a full picture of human development,” said Rabbi Cohen.

    The annual Rabbi Norman F. Feldheym Lecture was established in 1985 at the time of Feldheym’s death by members of Congregation Emanu El as well as many friends in the wider community.

    Rabbi Feldheym served as rabbi of Congregation Emanu El from 1937 to 1971 and as Rabbi Emeritus of the historic congregation from 1971 until his death in 1985. In addition to being a leader of religious life in the Inland Empire and a highly respected community leader, he was a devoted student of Freudian and Jungian psychology and in his retirement taught at the Jung institute in Switzerland.

    This January 2012 ad uses the campaign theme for the Magnolia at Highland – “Affordable Luxury”.  We also target seniors by saying, “For ages 62 and better”.  The campaign was very successful. The senior apartments have 100+ person waiting list.

    This is where your research bears fruit. Take the information obtained through your research that tells you who your customer is, what they like, and what they like about your products and services to develop a campaign theme to reach your target market.
     
    This theme must translate well into print, radio, television, your website, billboards, Email, social networks, and direct mail to grab the target’s attention and leave the right impression.     Start by reviewing your sales and promote your most popular product or the thing you are known for.
     
    80 percent of your business comes from 20 percent of your customers.  Define who the 20 percent are, what they want and create your campaign to go after more people like them!
     
    For Argosy University they are highly recognized for their Postgraduate degrees in Psychology, Education and Business, that’s their 20 percent.  So our goal was to increase enrollment in those programs.  They also have bachelors degree completion programs and other offerings.

    How do you start?  Try creating a quick five-second description of what you do that makes your customer feel better good about buying your product.  Then massage it into a slogan.
     
    Here are some examples.
     

    • For SpeakerCraft we created the slogan “The Art of Sound”.  They sell speakers and high-end stereo equipment.  Not just things to make music, but things to make music sound exceptionally great.

     

    • For the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health AIDS program the slogan was “Know your Status”.  We show multiethnic real people and ask the question: “Are you HIV Positive of Negative?”

    • For The Magnolia at Highland the slogan is “Affordable Luxury”.   This project is a low income senior citizen complex, however it is designed and built like a luxury resort.  So we sold it that way.   We used the images reserved for luxury spas and luxury resorts, people in the pool, the cabañas and the beautiful entry.  Instead of 62 and older we came up with 62 and Better.

    • For Argosy University it’s “Education that Works.”  This slogan has multiple meanings.  Not only does the education help you be a better person, but the reason many people get a post-graduate degree is to get a better job and make more money, so having a degree from Argosy helps to get you more work.  The other issue with Universities new to the area is the question of trust. We included the line “quality Education for over 30 years in Psychology, Education and Business” to demonstrate that Argosy was not a new University, just new to the area.  This line is to solidify the brand and increase trust.  The campaign increase enrollment 450 percent and made the campus the fastest growing start up the history of 22 campus system.
    • Yes, it does sound like our slogan.  Argosy abandoned it and so we picked it up.  Waste not, want not.

    Good luck, and remember the target for your slogan is your customers, not you!
