    LaSalle Gives 220 Covid Shots to Local Black Residents

It helps” said Dr. Michael Andrew Owens, pastor of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church

    (Rialto, Calif.) Nurses from LaSalle Medical Associates vaccinated more than 220 people Saturday during a Rialto clinic designed to give the Black community better access to COVID-19 vaccinations.

    LaSalle teamed up with San Bernardino’s New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and The Inland Empire Concerned African American Churches to put at a recent clinic, part of an innovative approach in which the church gathered a list of interested people, and LaSalle staff members contacted them to make appointments.

    Alicia Cazenave of San Bernardino was happy that her church worked with LaSalle to bypass the bureaucratic roadblocks she experienced earlier when trying to make appointments for family members through government agencies.

    She arrived early Saturday morning and was third in line to get her shot.

    “I am relieved to be getting it,” said Cazenave, 59. “Having the church organize it helped as far as access. The church gave us better access.”

    She was also happy to be getting the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which is just one dose.

    “The shot was good. No pain,” she said after being inoculated.

    Dr Michael Andrew Owens, pastor of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, was thankful that LaSalle worked directly with the church to set up vaccination appointments.

    “I had to try to get around the bureaucracy myself, so I appreciate that our health partners engaged with trusted community partners like churches, and I appreciate the respect for the church, knowing that we have influence in the community,” he said. “It’s good to offer clear access from familiar people to the community. It helps.

    “And the one shot, that sold itself. I think a lot of people were waiting,” he said.

    “Today we are giving Johnson’s vaccine. It’s just one shot and you’re done. We just got it last week,” said Dr. Albert Arteaga, LaSalle’s president and founder.  “It’s as effective as the others at preventing serious disease or death. That’s up to nearly 100 percent.”

    During Saturday’s clinic, he stood outside, answering questions and sharing light-hearted banter with people waiting in line.

    “After your shot, you may get a slight fever tonight. But don’t worry. It’s just a case of Saturday Night Fever,” he joked with one man.

    Vicki Creighton, from Riverside, said she was eager to get vaccinated Saturday.

    “I feel confident, and I feel it’s going to be great. My mom and dad are 88 and they had their shots,” she said.

    Deborah Neal, from Lake Elsinore, said she learned of Saturday’s clinic when a friend shared a flier from New Hope.

    “I sure am relieved, especially since it’s one shot,” she said.

    Dr. Arteaga told her, “You notice that we are taking everyone who comes and not finding reasons to turn people away.”

    Keep The Bells Ringing This Christmas Season

    (SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.) The “miracle” of Christmas is repeated through the joy of caring and sharing. The San Bernardino Salvation Army (www.salvationarmyusa.org)  seek volunteers to Keep The Bells Ringing in Bloomington, Colton, Grand Terrace, Highland, Rialto, and San Bernardino.
    The nationally recognized shiny red kettle is an integral part of the Christmas scene, with millions of dollars donated each year to aid needy families, seniors, and the homeless, in keeping with the spirit of the season.

    “This is a wonderful way to help disadvantaged people in our community, simply by volunteering as bell ringers,” said Major Daniel Henderson, commander of The Salvation Army of San Bernardino. “We’re looking for individuals, families and groups to spend a day at one of our more than 30 locations in our area.”

    The Salvation Army began ringing its bells this year on Friday, Nov. 18 and continues from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday until Christmas Eve.

    Many volunteers ring two hours at a time, but groups are asked to provide ringers who can work in shifts for an entire day. Anyone who would like to donate a few hours of his or her time can volunteer.  Individuals under the age of 16 must be accompanied a parent or guardian.

    “The more people who volunteer, the fewer people the agency must hire,” said Major Henderson.  “Each volunteer who Keeps the Bells Ringing saves us $10 an hour.  That means more money raised in direct support of our services goes to families in need.”

    Where does the money raised by the ringing bells in San Bernardino go?  The Salvation Army provides emergency services including food; lodging for homeless or displaced families; clothing and furniture; assistance with rent or mortgage and transportation when funds are available. The Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN) assists rescue workers and evacuees in  disasters such as fires and earthquakes.

    For Christmas, the Salvation Army creates holiday food baskets for about 500 local families. On Christmas Eve, The Salvation Army of San Bernardino hosts a Christmas Dinner that historically provides a delicious meal to approximatly 300 people. Donations raised by volunteers who Keep The Bells Ringing  help make this possible.

    The Corp has other need for your finial and food donations. “The San Bernardino Corps needs food every day for those at its Hospitality House and Transitional Living Center,” said Integrated Mission Coordinator Lieutenant Cathie McCulley.  Up to 100 family members stay in its transitional and emergency family shelters.

    How the Bell Ringer campaign began:
    Captain Joseph McFee, serving with the San Francisco Salvation Army Corps in 1891, wanted to serve Christmas dinner to the poor in his neighborhood. But he didn’t have money to do so.

    As a sailor in Liverpool, England, Captain Mcfee saw people on the docks throw money into a large kettle called “Simpson’s Pot” to help the poor. He decided this might work in California too.

    Captain Mcfee set up a kettle at the Oakland Ferry Landing, which operated a ferry that was, in those days, the only way across San Francisco Bay. He put a sign on the kettle saying “Keep the Pot Boiling” and raised enough money to serve the Christmas dinner.

    His idea spread quickly, and by 1897 Salvation Army Corps nationwide were collecting money in kettles to serve the needy in their communities. Among the Salvation Army Corps collecting money this way before the turn of the 20th Century was The Salvation Army of San Bernardino, which formed in 1887.

    Free Thanksgiving Day Dinner At The Salvation Army for 138 Years

    (SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.) – Salvation Army chapters throughout the Inland Empire will serve Thanksgiving Day meals, to all that attend including those who are without fa ily or unable to provide a full-course turkey dinner for themselves.

    The San Bernardino Corps has served Thanksgiving dinner for 138 years.

    “We are pleased to prove God’s spirit of giving and provide a Thanksgiving Day dinner to those in need,” said Major Henderson, corps officer at the San Bernardino Corps. “We also welcome those who are familiar with the many other services we offer throughout the year.”

    The San Bernardino Corps is the dinner at the Corps new headquarters at 2626 Pacific Avenue, San Bernardino, where it moved in August of 2015.

    At many locations, including the San Bernardino Corps, these meals take place from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m., or until food runs out. Some locations will offer meals earlier and/or later in the day.

    The Salvation Army relies mostly on donations, so food will vary somewhat at locations, but will include turkey or chicken, pies, stuffing or rice, cranberry sauce, pies, cakes, greens, and other side dishes.
    “We always have plenty of donations for Thanksgiving, but if you’d like to bring some non-perishable food it is always welcomed,” said Major Henderson.

    “In addition to our Thanksgiving Day meal, we serve dinners to about 75 homeless women and children every day, and to some 25 men who are currently taking advantage of our cold-weather shelter in the evenings,” said Lt. Cathie McCully

    Six nights a week, we serve meals close to 200 hungry people, some who are homeless and some who have a place to live, but need help with food to pay for everything else.

    “The Salvation Army, San Bernardino will be giving toys for hundreds of children and 600 families holiday food baskets a few days before Christmas,” said Lt. McCully

    Salvation Army: Resources Needed to Aid Families in Transition

    Volunteers help serve 52,504 free, hot, nutritious meals were served to the hungry from The Salvation Army in San Bernardino. Now the corps needs help to fund services.

    San Bernardino, Calif. – The Inland Empire branch of the Salvation Army today issued an urgent appeal to the community for resources to provide support to area families in need. The San Bernardino Citadel Corps, which serves Bloomington, Colton, Grand Terrace, Highland, Rialto and San Bernardino, is reporting a financial deficit of $45,000 (now $90,000), citing a shift in contributions following the December 2 terrorist attack.
    The public is encouraged to donate money, food, and goods and services to help replenish Salvation Army coffers, and to consider including the Salvation Army in their charitable giving and estate plans. Contributions can be made online at www.SalvationArmyUSA.org or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY.
    “The Salvation Army is proud to have been a part of the community outpouring of support to the victims and families affected by the December 2 tragedy,” said Anne Metu, program director for the organization’s Transitional Living Center. “Now, we are asking the community to help us rebuild our resources so that we can continue providing assistance to families with urgent needs for food, shelter and child care.”
    Metu cited an example of a family—a mother and her six children, ages 3 to 13—who relied on the Salvation Army Emergency Shelter and Transitional Living Program when evicted from their home: “Mona” and the children’s father had separated and she did not have sufficient income to house, feed and clothe the family.
    After a short stay in the shelter, she found employment and was accepted into transitional housing, but soon lost her job when she could not find childcare during the children’s Spring Break from school. With support from the staff and residents at the Transitional Living Program, Mona was able to return to work and was soon reunited with the children’s father.
    Mona and her husband now live in affordable housing as a family unit and the children continue to participate in Salvation Army youth programs, mentoring other children who are faced with similar life circumstances.
    Since 1887, the San Bernardino Corps has helped residents of the San Bernardino area overcome life’s challenges. Its current service area is San Bernardino, Highland, Bloomington, Colton, Grand Terrace and Rialto.

    (San Bernardino, CA) The Salvation Army San Bernardino Corps is looking for donations of 600 turkeys and or hams for its holiday dinners and food boxes for people in need.
     
    The Salvation Army of San Bernardino hosts a Christmas Dinner from to 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. that often brings in 300 people. For Christmas, the Salvation Army also delivers holiday food boxes for more than 600 local families.
     
    The San Bernardino Salvation Army also hosts its annual New Years Dinner for hundreds of needy families, mothers, and children on New Years Day at 4:45 p.m.
     
    Donors may drop off turkeys, other food and cash or gift card donation at the Salvation Army’s Corps Office located on 746 W. Fifth St. in San Bernardino. “If you have a large donation, call us at (909) 888-1336 and we will set up a time to pick up the food,” said Major Dan Henderson, Corps officer.
     
    The Salvation Army also accepts food and cash donations throughout the year to supplement its daily meal program for the area’s needy residents.
     
    “Last year 60,475 free, hot, nutritious meals were served to the hungry from The Salvation Army’s homeless shelter, and Sunday through Friday at 4:45 p.m. at the Corps Office on 746 West 5th Street in San Bernardino,” said Major Henderson.

    School Physicals and Immunizations are Generally Free with Affordable Care Act

    (San Bernardino, Calif.) – For many students, seeing the doctor for their annual physical is a requirement at the start of a new school year.
     
    While in the past, some families couldn’t afford school physicals because they lacked health insurance, California Care and California Covered in most cases allows health care providers to offer preventive care at no cost, even when patients have health insurance policies that usually require co-pays.
     
    “Annual physicals are a good idea for everyone,” said Dr. Albert Arteaga, president of LaSalle Medical Associates, In some cases, the schools your children attend will require them.”
     
    “Physicals are required when a child enters school in California, most commonly kindergarten,” said Dr. Albert Arteaga, founder and president of LaSalle Medical Associates, Inc. “If a middle school, high school, college or university student plans to play sports, all schools will require them to obtain a physical at the beginning of the season. Many college and university students often need back-to-school physicals as a condition of living on campus.”
     
    School Physicals and Immunizations are generally FREE with California Care health insurance membership.
     
    Physicals for children typically include making sure they have reached adequate height and weight for their age. Doctors also make sure children are up-to-date on the immunizations needed for their age.
     
    Young children also are evaluated to make sure they can perform certain tasks. For instance a child entering kindergarten should be able to play well with other children, state his or her first and last name, color with crayons and dress him or herself.
     
    Kindergarteners who are not able to do these things may have developmental delays that will cause them to need extra help throughout their education, and may also have medical conditions that need close monitoring by a doctor.
     
    As with adults, physicals also are a time to check overall health, by checking blood pressure, hearing and vision. Doctors also may order blood tests to check for anemia, and a urinalysis to check for infections and diseases such as diabetes.
     
    “All of these things we check for in a physical are what’s known as preventive health care,” Dr. Arteaga said. “We want to make sure we catch things as early as we can so that we can start interventions before they cause serious health problems.”
     
    “Thankfully, now that almost all families have health insurance, these interventions will not be an expensive burden on them. With insurance, they may have to pay a small deductible or copay for treatment, but not the hundreds or thousands it would cost without.”
     
    Most K-12 students in San Bernardino County begin school in August, as do many colleges. Parents of any students needing a mandatory back-to-school physical to start school before Labor Day should schedule an appointment with their doctor immediately. Athletes, and anyone who starts school in September should not wait much longer.
     
    “It is important not to wait until the last minute,” Dr. Arteaga said. “Summer is our busy season, and some doctors won’t be able to see you right away and we do accept patents with out an appointment. “

     (Redlands, CA)  Once upon a time, if a family wanted to build a home, everyone in the community would welcome its new neighbors by pitching in and helping. The home would quickly rise up from the ground, and the grateful new residents of this community would show their gratitude by becoming productive citizens who, in turn, helped other neighbors.

     
    Today, an organization called Habitat for Humanity provides that same kind of help; by organizing community volunteers to help deserving low-income families who as an example make up to $50,950 a year for a family of four build their first home.
     
    It isn’t quite as simple though as it was “once upon a time.” For one thing, in the 21st Century, there are a myriad of law governing how people build houses, and there are permits that must be obtained from several local government agencies. It also takes a great deal of skill and knowledge to put together the type of home in which a modern family would feel comfortable.
     
    To make all of that happen a professional construction manager is essential. At Habitat for Humanity, San Bernardino Area, this construction manager is licensed general contractor Tim Garcia.
     
    “Tim is a professional contractor who is dedicated to his work,” said Dennis Baxter, executive director of the Habitat for Humanity of San Bernardino. “And he is a man who does many good things for his community.”
     
    Garcia has had a relationship with Habitat for Humanity of San Bernardino almost since it began.  This connection started at the First Presbyterian Church of San Bernardino, where Garcia and Habitat for Humanity of San Bernardino chapter founder, San Bernardino Mayor Patrick Morris, both attend.
     
    Mayor Morris started the local Habitat chapter in 1992 after working with one of the international organization’s most famous volunteers, former United States President Jimmy Carter.  At the beginning, the Mayor’s church got on board by sending teams of volunteers to Habitat for Humanity’s building projects.
     
    Two years later, Garcia signed up for one of those teams, and thoroughly enjoyed this service. Not only did he volunteer many times after that, he also served as a member of the Board of Directors from 1999-2001 and as resident from 2001–2002.
     
    He enjoyed his contributions to Habitat for Humanity hence since 2004; Garcia has been a part-time employee of Habitat for Humanity, serving as its construction manager.
     
    “That meant they started paying me for the things I was already doing,” Garcia said. “It is my job to train and supervise all the volunteers, which I had been doing as a volunteer.”

    Garcia also has a full-time job managing his own business, Inland Construction, which provides remodeling and building services to the general public. He has been a licensed general contractor since 2003, and worked in construction for a decade before.
     
    Habitat for Humanity has thousands of chapters throughout the world, including 15 in southern California. The San Bernardino chapter, established in 1992 by current San Bernardino Mayor Patrick Morris, serves most of San Bernardino County. Its territory extends from Fontana to Yucaipa, and north to the desert and Victor Valley areas.
     
    Garcia is a long time resident of San Bernardino and the son of community leaders and philanthropists Ernie and Dottie Garcia.
     
    All Habitat for Humanity organizations acquire either vacant land or dilapidated homes. From these, Habitat creates quality homes, and provides financial assistance to carefully selected families who will receive these homes when they are complete.  The families contribution includes 500 hours of sweat equity in the Habitat for Humanity projects, pay zero interest and pay monthly mortgages of about $500 to $700 a month.
     
    The adults in these families work with Habitat for Humanity staff and community volunteers to construct the homes, although the projects are managed and supervised by licensed general contractors.  Since it has volunteer labor, and often uses donated supplies, it constructs homes for less cost than typical construction.
     
    The San Bernardino chapter serves San Bernardino County communities between Fontana and Yucaipa, as well as the Mountain Communities of Running Springs, Lake Arrowhead, and Crestline, and the Upper Desert towns of Hesperia, Apple Valley and Victorville.
     
    Habitat for Humanity has plans to build seven homes in San Bernardino and Grand Terrace for families that as an example make up to $50,950 for a family of four.

In 2010, they will further assist the Salvation Army by conducting Scouting for Food on Saturday, Nov. 13. This is a nationwide event for the Boy Scouts of America.     (San Bernardino, Calif.) This Thanksgiving, the San Bernardino Corps of the Salvation Army will once again provide Thanksgiving dinner to help needy families of the Inland Valley.
     
    The San Bernardino Corps will serve dinner from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28 at its Corps headquarters building on 746 West Fifth St.
     
    “Times are really tough for everyone, especially at this time of year when people really need an extra hand to get them through the holiday season,” said Major Daniel Henderson, San Bernardino Corps officer. “We have a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner planned, complete with turkey, potatoes, gravy, stuffing, vegetables and pie, and all are welcome to join us.”
     
    The annual Thanksgiving meal brings in hundreds of families, single mothers with children and individuals who do not have the means to provide themselves a Thanksgiving dinner. People come from throughout the Inland Valley for this Thanksgiving dinner, which often serves close to 300 people each year.
     
    The hungry families are joined by hundreds of volunteers who help prepare the food and serve meals to the families. Along with asking volunteers to help serve food, the Salvation Army is encouraging people to donate turkeys or hams, side dishes and other food by calling (909) 888-1336.
     
    “An effort of this size is not a one person show,” said Major Henderson. “Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve the food along with decorating the facility. It truly is a community effort in making this event a success. Thanksgiving should be a special day for everyone, not just for those who can afford it.”

    (Redlands, CA)  The Ribbon Cutting and Dedication, of Habitat for Humanity’s, San Bernardino Area’s newest home in the high desert city of Hesperia is Sunday, October 13th from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.
     
    “After we cut the ribbon, the Espinoza family will move into their new home,” said Dennis Baxter, executive director for Habitat for Humanity.
     
    Chase Bank donated the one-story 1,600 square foot home with three bedrooms and two bathrooms and San Manuel Band of Mission Indians funded the $30,000 rehabilitation of the home.
     
    Steven and Jessica currently live in Colton in a small house that they share with relatives. The house is overcrowded, poorly insulated with no heating, and the septic system is inadequate to handle the number of residents in the house.
     
    Steven and Jessica are the parents of two children, son age 6 and daughter age 2. The Espinoza family is so excited about the prospect of owning their own home.  Jessica spends some of her sweat equity hours in the Habitat ReStore!
     
    “We are looking forward to owning a home that my children can grow up in; a home that is for us, with no problems. We are very thankful and truly appreciative to partner with Habitat for Humanity!” said Steven Espinoza.
     
    “The house is a great fit for the four-member Espinoza family.  It sits on a half-acre lot great for the kids to play and to entertain family and friends.  The front yard is a low maintenance, xeriscape with 150 sq. ft. of grass for the kids to play on,” said Baxter.
     
    The Mission of Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate substandard, poverty housing. “We plan to achieve this mission by providing decent, affordable housing for low-income families by bringing together the necessary volunteers, experienced help, suppliers, city and government agencies, and families to form partnerships in an atmosphere of God’s love for all people,” said Baxter.
     
    Since the affiliate was incorporated in 1992, Habitat for Humanity has built or rehabilitated 25 homes in Redlands, San Bernardino, Fontana, Loma Linda, Colton, Yucaipa, Highland and now Hesperia, delivering housing for more than 100 people.
     
    Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program. Selected local families who receive homes must:

    • Contribute 500 hours of sweat equity by participating in the actual construction of their own house and other Habitat projects
    • Pay closing costs
    • Pay a monthly payment of combined mortgage, taxes, and insurance payments, on an interest free loan over 20 – 30 years
